# Keyboard Shortcuts

> Master keyboard shortcuts to navigate Page Assist efficiently

Page Assist provides keyboard shortcuts to enhance your productivity. There are two types of shortcuts: Extension shortcuts (browser-level) and Application shortcuts (within the Page Assist interface).

## Extension Shortcuts

These shortcuts work globally across your browser and can be customized through your browser's extension management page.

| Action       | Default Shortcut | Description                                  |
| ------------ | ---------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| Open Sidebar | `Ctrl+Shift+Y` | Opens the Page Assist sidebar on any webpage |
| Open Web UI | `Ctrl+Shift+L` | Opens the Page Assist Web UI in a new tab |

<Note>
  On macOS, use `Cmd` instead of `Ctrl` for these shortcuts.
</Note>

## Application Shortcuts

These shortcuts work within the Page Assist interface (both SidePanel and Web UI).

| Action           | Shortcut       | Description                                            |
| ---------------- | -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| New Chat         | `Ctrl+Shift+O` | Starts a new chat conversation                         |
| Toggle Sidebar   | `Ctrl+B`       | Opens/closes the chat history sidebar                  |
| Focus Textarea   | `Shift+Esc`    | Focuses the message input field                        |
| Toggle Chat Mode | `Ctrl+E` | Toggles between normal chat and chat with current page |

## Customizing Extension Shortcuts

You can customize the extension shortcuts to match your preferences.

### Chrome and Chromium Browsers

To change keyboard shortcuts in Chrome, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, and other Chromium-based browsers:

1. Navigate to `chrome://extensions/shortcuts` in your address bar
2. Find "Page Assist" in the list
3. Click the pencil icon next to the action you want to change
4. Press your desired key combination
5. Click outside the field to save

<Tip>
  The shortcuts page shows all extensions with keyboard shortcuts. Use the search or scroll to find Page Assist.
</Tip>

### Firefox

To change keyboard shortcuts in Firefox, LibreWolf, Zen Browser, and other Firefox-based browsers:

1. Navigate to `about:addons` in your address bar
2. Click the gear icon (⚙️) in the top right
3. Select "Manage Extension Shortcuts"
4. Find "Page Assist - A Web UI for Local AI Models" in the list
5. Click in the shortcut field
6. Press your desired key combination
7. Changes are saved automatically

<Note>
  Firefox requires shortcuts to include at least one modifier key (Ctrl, Alt, or Cmd on macOS).
</Note>

## Shortcut Conflicts

If a keyboard shortcut isn't working:

1. **Check for conflicts**: Another extension or application might be using the same shortcut
2. **Browser shortcuts**: Some shortcuts are reserved by the browser and cannot be overridden
3. **Operating system**: System-level shortcuts take precedence over browser shortcuts
4. **Clear the shortcut**: Try removing the shortcut and setting it again

### Common Conflicts

* `Ctrl+Shift+L` may conflict with browser or system shortcuts on some systems
* `Ctrl+B` is often used for bookmarks in browsers, but works within Page Assist UI
* `Ctrl+E` might be used by search bars in some browsers

## Resetting to Defaults

To restore default keyboard shortcuts:

### Chrome/Chromium

1. Go to `chrome://extensions/shortcuts`
2. Find Page Assist
3. Click the "Restore defaults" icon (circular arrow) next to each shortcut

### Firefox

1. Go to `about:addons`
2. Open "Manage Extension Shortcuts"
3. Click the "Reset" button next to each Page Assist shortcut

## Tips for Efficient Use

* **Quick Access**: Use `Ctrl+Shift+Y` (or your custom shortcut) to instantly open the sidebar while reading any webpage
* **Fast Context Switch**: Use `Ctrl+E` to quickly toggle between normal chat and chat with the current page
* **Hands-Free Navigation**: Use `Shift+Esc` to focus the input field without reaching for your mouse
* **Fresh Start**: Use `Ctrl+Shift+O` to quickly start a new conversation
* **History Navigation**: Use `Ctrl+B` to toggle the chat history sidebar when you need to reference previous conversations

## Platform Differences

### macOS

On macOS, keyboard shortcuts typically use:

* `Cmd` instead of `Ctrl`
* Default shortcuts become `Cmd+Shift+Y` and `Cmd+Shift+L`

### Linux

Linux follows the same convention as Windows, using `Ctrl` as the primary modifier key.

### Windows

Standard `Ctrl` modifier is used for all shortcuts.

## Accessibility

Keyboard shortcuts are essential for accessibility. Page Assist shortcuts are designed to:

* Work with screen readers
* Not conflict with common accessibility tools
* Provide alternative navigation methods for users who prefer keyboard-only interaction

## Troubleshooting

### Shortcut Not Working

1. Verify the shortcut is correctly set in your browser's extension shortcuts page
2. Check if another extension is using the same shortcut
3. Restart your browser after changing shortcuts
4. Try a different key combination

### Shortcut Changed Unexpectedly

* Browser updates may occasionally reset extension shortcuts
* Check your shortcuts page and reconfigure if needed

### Can't Set Desired Shortcut

* Some shortcuts are reserved by the browser or operating system
* Try adding or removing modifier keys (Shift, Alt)
* Single-key shortcuts are not allowed for security reasons
